Our exclusive Hazeldean sandstone was used for this restoration project on the Old Quadrangle. The stone will now mellow and age like the existing buildings that surround it.

Post WW2 rejection of Natural Stone beyond use as a highly selected and expensive veneer in the UK in favour of high input energy man-made alternatives, saw rapid decline of this industry due both to a desire for societal change and a plentiful supply of cheap coal allowing man-made products to be an attractive alternative.

Meanwhile Europe, where coal was more costly, chose to use its high energy input man-made materials to very selectively rebuild its damaged infrastructure and chose Stone to rebuild much of its housing. By engaging with its quarries, it chose to build in the most efficient sizes the quarries could yield which gave surety to the industry and allowed them to mechanise.

And so the story went to a large extent for the next 75-80 years.
This legend and picture of UK Stone would lead us to believe that our material is somehow less viable as a reliable construction material than both imported Stones and man-made alternatives.

We believe this is untrue and reject the myth and are proud to have embarked on demonstrating the point both in our work with THE STONE COLLECTIVE and also mechanising our processes to embrace all that some 80 years of development can show us.
This we believe is the future for our beautiful sustainable material and a new mechanised stone age.

Cameron House sits amidst the picturesque landscape of Loch Lomond and stands as a beacon of timeless splendour at the tranquil loch shores.

We were extremely proud to have received the award for Repair & Restoration category at The Stone Federation Natural Stone awards for our supply of Darney sandstone on the project!

Judges commented that the masonry work had been undertaken with every care and attention to detail:

‘The finished results blend effectively with the quality and listed status of the original structure and will help to warrant the continued successful commercial nature of the venture.’

An incredible view pictured here. Hazeldean sandstone was used to great effect to produce The Lookout on Calton Hill, proving a great match for the existing surrounding buildings; the stone's white/cream tones and variation give Edinburgh its unique architectural character.
